Convert a Hustler 5 band 5BTV to 17
Meters An easy add
on antenna project by Larry, KK5ID This addition to the
Hustler 5BTV vertical is based on the 4BTV modification
seen
here
After seeing the 4BTV mod idea, Larry, KK5ID Hustled around
and came up with this cool mod for adding 17 meters to his 5BTV
Vertical.
Larry tells us,
"I now have the 17 meter modification on my 5 band
Hustler. One adjustment in radiator length and the thing slipped right
into a 1.1 to 1 match. It did change my 15 meter adjustments, but that was
easily remedied. Just cut for your favorite center frequency on 17
meters using that old tried and true formula: 234 / Freqmhz = Length in
feet
You'll end up with a 1/4 wave length addition of one single
wire to the Hustler 5BTV to get it performing very nicely on 17 meters.
The wire runs along the main radiator of the 5BTV about 8 inches away in
my modification.
I used aluminum flat stock and a stainless U-bolt
for my bottom support to get the vertical 1/4 wave addition of wire away
from the main part of the 5BTV. At the top, I installed a small pulley,
used fishing nylon line and pulled the radiator up.
Cool! The nylon ties off at the base of the
antenna. SEE PICTURE AT BOTTOM OF
ARTICLE
This is such a simple modification that you should
not have anything but FUN doing it! And you will be pleasently
surprised that your 5BTV now has 17 meters added for almost
nothing! One note of caution! I am
concerned about the aluminum top piece. (capacitance hat) I think that a
hard wind could force the antenna to bend, the wire to tighten and the
aluminum to break. I'll do some think'n on that. If you have any
ideas, let us know.
Thanks again for this great idea. 73,
KK5ID......... Larry G.
